A recent investigation by The New York Times examined how Russian-backed influence operations are targeting political conversations ahead of upcoming elections in the United States, Israel and France. The reporting highlighted a coordinated campaign known as Operation Doppelgänger, which uses fake social media accounts, fabricated news articles and amplification networks to spread divisive narratives across digital platforms.

Alethea's research was central to the story, identifying a new wave of coordinated activity involving more than 50 fake personas and over 1,000 amplifying accounts responsible for an estimated 150,000 posts on X. As Alethea Founder Lisa Kaplan explained in the article, these operations demonstrate how easily false narratives can spread online and undermine public trust, even when individual posts receive limited engagement.

The findings reinforce a broader challenge facing organizations, institutions and the public: coordinated influence operations are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using deceptive identities, established online conversations and cloned news websites to manipulate information environments. Identifying these networks and understanding the narratives they promote is essential to recognizing emerging threats before they escalate.
